Overview
New Hampshire was first established as a fishing colony in 1623, making it one of the earliest established settlements it what would become the United States of America. The land of New Hampshire was the sight of many battles and the intent of the inhabitants was the cause of many more. There were battles between the Scots and the British who had settled there, and later between the Native Americans and the settlers. There are many interesting facts about the settlers and the future inhabitants of New Hampshire, including the signing of the Declaration of Independence by New Hampshire's Josiah Bartlett, Matthew Thornton and William Whipple. There is also General John Stark's victory at the Battle of Bennington and the success of Captain John Paul Jones at sea.
Activities & Attractions
There are many attractions in New Hampshire, historic and otherwise. There are many mansions and homesteads of historical value that conduct tours in the tourist season. One of particular interest is the Castle in the Clouds, which is the name of the Castle Spring Estate. The beauty is breathtaking and there are tram rides, tours of the bottling plant, and gift shops that have very reasonable prices. If you love outdoor fun, there are some state parks in New Hampshire which are open year round. Mount Sunapee is one of them and they have hiking, chairlift rides, skiing and snowboarding. Year round there are many attractions and activities to keep visitors and natives alike busy. The Hobo Railroad is a popular train that travels along the twisting Pemi River and is great fun for children and adults.
Lodging
Lodging is never a problem in New Hampshire. You can choose a hotel or motel in the bustling city or a cabin on a rural lake. Other possibilities are enjoying the warmth and charm of a bed and breakfast or having a care-free time at one of the resorts. The choice is yours and there are many settings from which to choose. Transportation
Buses and taxis are the main modes of public transportation in New Hampshire. There are also charter buses that can take you across the state or out of the state. As with any city transportation, bus routes and plans are not perfect but a reasonable system has been put in place to ensure that travel between city points is possible.
