Overview

New Mexico is a state that is located in the southwestern part of the United States. The state is really a cultural haven and has a wonderful history. The area was first inhabited by the Folsom Paleo-Indians whose artifacts were uncovered in the early 1900's. New Mexico has been inhabited by Native Americans for many centuries. The Pueblo Indians, the Apache and Navajo are some of the important Native American tribes of New Mexico. During the Civil War, New Mexico helped the Union by cutting the supply lines of the invading Confederates at Apache Pass. After the railroads were set up, many outsiders entered the state and seized the lands of the natives which they had held for centuries. Another interesting historic note about New Mexico is the Lincoln County War. It was a conflict between two mercantile houses that involved such notables as Pat Garrett, Billy the Kid, and Gov. Lew Wallace, who wrote the novel Ben Hur.

Activities & Attractions

National Parks and historic places are among the many tourist attractions you may want to visit while you are in New Mexico. There are also caverns, amusement parks, ice caves, and the Science Museum that you can include in your itinerary. You may want to explore some of the beautiful scenic byways in New Mexico that are breathtaking. New Mexico has some of the finest casinos as well as incredible performances. There are many events and attractions to fill your time and interest.

If you are interested in museums, then the Smokey Bear Historical Park in Capitian, the National Atomic Museum in Albuquerque, the Clovis Depot Model Train Museum, and the War Eagles Air Museum in Santa Teresa are just some of the choices you have. There are also many festivals throughout New Mexico and they are both learning and entertaining experience. There is no shortage of fine arts either and you can find a treasure trove of exhibits. Of course, for the kids and the young at heart, you can find amusement parks in New Mexico.

Lodging

There are golf resorts, old adobe homes that have been transformed into bed and breakfasts, and even spas where you can stay in New Mexico. You may want to enjoy one of the resorts or the lodgings at one of the hot spring locations. You will find plenty of accommodations for lodging while in New Mexico and if you are looking for no frills, there are many hotels and motels too. Luxury Inn, Garrett's Desert Inn, Camel Rock Suites, Sunrise Springs, and Hotel St Francis are some of the recommended hotels in the state.

Transportation

You can travel by buses or trams around the state. Railways connect most of the places in New Mexico. You can also travel in your RV. There are plenty of RV campsites in the state. Domestic airlines connect the major cities in New Mexico. If you wish to travel at your own pace and convenience, then the best option is to rent a car or hire a taxi to go to places of interest in the state.
