Overview

New York City, or NYC, is one of the biggest and busiest cities in the United States. It is located on a large natural harbor on the Atlantic coast in Northeastern region of America. Some of the nicknames of New York are "the city that doesn't sleep," "Big Apple", and "Gotham." It comprises of five boroughs including the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island.

The Bronx was named after the Swedish settler Jonas Bronx who settled here in 1639. It is located at the northernmost tip of the New York City and is the only borough that is not located on an island. Brooklyn is a very populous borough.The Brooklyn Bridge was completed in 1883. This engineering milestone ranks among the world's greatest suspension bridges. Dutch traders reportedly purchased the island of "Man-a-hatt-an" from the Algonquin Indians in 1621 for $24 worth of beads and other trinkets. It is one of the most famous real estate deals ever recorded. Queens is located across the East River from midtown Manhattan. Queens is a top cultural destination, where you can see coffee houses and art centers. Staten Island is on the tip of Manhattan. You can visit Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty from here as well.

Activities & Attractions

Some of the most famous attractions of NYC are the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, Wall Street, and the unfortunate Ground Zero of the September 11 attacks. There are many other places of interest in New York City if you dare to venture beyond the masses.

Manhattan houses the head quarters of many corporations and even the United Nations. You can visit the Broadway Theatre, Greenwich Village, and the Madison Square Garden here. There are plenty of museums that you can visit in the city like Sports Museum of America, Children's Museum of Art, American Craft Museum, Alternate Museum, and American Museum of Natural History. The Bronx Zoo, Queens Zoo, Andrus Planetarium, and New York Aquarium are other popular tourist destinations in New York City.

You can find plenty of lodging facilities in New York City that fit your requirements. New York Marriot, Casablanca Hotel, Renaissance, the Hilton Club, and Four Seasons are some of the recommended hotels that you can check out in the city.

Transportation

The subway is the most common mode of public transportation in New York City. It is one of the fastest and most convenient ways to get around unless you want to try your luck with a New York City cab driver. There are also busses that ply around the city. You can also rent cars for your travel around the city. Getting around by car is not an easy affair in New York City. The rail network connects the suburbs to the city.
