The state of New York is located in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern regions of the United States. New York is often referred to as New York State to distinguish it from the New York City. The state is rich in history as it was the site of President George Washington's Inauguration on April 30, 1789. Famous people associated with New York include Millard Fillmore, Teddy Roosevelt, Jonas Salk, Norman Rockwell, and Vince Lombardi.
New York has many state parks and two major forest preserves. The Adirondack Park is the largest park in the New York State. Niagara Falls, on the Niagara River as it flows from the Lake Erie to Lake Ontario, is a popular attraction. The other most visited tourist attraction is the Montauk Point State Park, which houses the Montauk Lighthouse. Hither Hills Park offers camping facilities and is a popular destination with surfcasting sport fishermen. There are other attractions in New York including historic sites such as the Schuyler Mansion State Historic Site and the Bennington Battlefield State Historic site.

New York City is a leading global city in the New York State. It plays an important role in influencing the commerce, finance, culture, fashion, and entertainment worldwide. It is also the birthplace of many cultural movements including the Harlem Renaissance in Literature and art.
The Statue of Liberty, which is one of the major attractions in New York City, was a gift from France to United States to mark the Centennial of the American Declaration of Independence. The Statue was closed for some time but now the museum and the 10-story pedestal are open to visitors. It represents, in addition to the friendship of America with France, the values of freedom and democracy that America is known for.
New York City has a large municipal park area and public beaches. Some of them are the Gateway National Recreation Area, which is part of the National Park system, Manhattan's Central Park, Prospect Park and Flushing Meadows Corona Park. Other major destinations include Empire State Building, Ellis Island, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Times Square, and Madison Avenue. Some of the famous events are Halloween Parade, the Tribeca Film Festival and free performances in Central at Summerstage.
In the outskirts of the New York City you can find Cooperstown, which holds the baseball museum, the Hudson Valley Raptor Center, and much more.
