Overview
North Carolina is a coastal state located in the southeastern United States. The area used to have nearly 30 Native American groups settled across the region. The 12th state to ratify the constitution, they seceded from the Union in 1861 and were brought back into the Union in 1868. The state has an interesting motto - esse quam videri - that means to be rather than to seem. You can find everything you are looking for in North Carolina like adventure, relaxation, mountains, beaches, cities, wilderness and more.
Activities & Attractions
There are many historic sites and attractions in North Carolina. One interesting spot is the Town Creek Indian Mound. It was once a ceremonial place for the Native Americans who inhabited the area. It has since been reconstructed and has structures that are based on 50 years of research. Another is the Biltmore Estate, which is a 250 room chateau created by George Vanderbilt in 1895. North Carolina also hosts one of the world's finest zoos.
You can find the world's largest recirculation artificial whitewater river here named Catawba. Paddle through the pond along the massive Cyprus and gum trees in Millpond State Park. Topsail Island integrates a pier, motel, restaurant, and tackle shop in a single place. There are many other attractions waiting for you in North Carolina that provide southern hospitality at reasonable rates.
Lodging
Lodgings can be quite a memorable experience in North Carolina should you choose to stay at one of the many bed and breakfast inns. Many are located on historic property and have fascinating stories to accompany the charming decor. North Carolina also has its share of "Haunted Inns" that attract the more adventurous travelers. There are also a wide variety of cabins, hotels and motels to suit your every need. Rental homes and properties are an option as well if you plan to stay an extended length of time, and who wouldn't want to stay in such a charming and historic part of the country?
Transportation
Buses and taxis are the main public transportation options in North Carolina. There are also jitneys in some parts of the state. Like most public transportation systems, it works well for its purpose but it is not without its flaws. Most visitors are quite content to rely on their own transportation while getting around in North Carolina, but if for some reason you are without a rental vehicle for a period of time, public transportation is should suffice.
