Oahu Vacations
Oahu Vacations
Overview
Oahu is the 3rd largest Hawaiian Island, after the Big Island and Maui. It is the most popular tourist destination and it also includes the capital, Honolulu. The island is nicknamed "the gathering place," and it is the home of the only real city in the islands.
Honolulu offers all the amenities and conveniences expected by the modern-day traveler. It has a bustling nightlife, many dining and shopping options, and plays host to numerous exciting cultural events. Oahu is not just about hustle and bustle. If you are looking for a peaceful retreat, you will also find that in Oahu. There are many calm oases on the island, where you can spend some quality alone time. The two mountain ranges, Koolau and Waianae that make up Oahu offer plenty of natural scenery to marvel at. There are also secluded white sand beaches and funky beach towns in other parts of Oahu.
On the island of Oahu, you can get a blend of both urban delights and the kind of tropical natural wonder that the Hawaiian Islands are known for.
Activities & Attractions
There are many things to do on the beautiful island of Oahu. You can hike on the lush mountainsides just minutes from the city. Feast at a luau (Hawaiian feast) under the stars one night and at a five star restaurant the next. Sunbathe on the north shore and dance the night away in Waikiki. Check out the herbal remedies in Chinatown and the historical artifacts that are housed in the Bishop Museum.
Water sports are immensely popular. You can take surfing lessons on Waikiki beach, or just watch as world-class surfers take on the big waves on the North Shore. Visit the North Shore, especially in winter, when the beaches are pounded by monster waves. You can visit Pearl Harbor and pay your respects to those who lost their lives there in World War II at the USS Arizona Memorial. You can also while your time away at the pineapple fields and white sand beaches.
Lodging
There are many hotels in the capital city, Honolulu. If you wish to stay outside Honolulu, you can choose from the many condos, vacation homes, and bed and breakfasts for your stay. Many places only accommodate you for longer stays of a month or more, due to zoning. Accommodations are available for every budget level. Hotel Renew, Courtyard by Marriott, the Royal Hawaiian, and Aqua Bamboo and Spa are some of the popular hotels in which you can stay.
Transportation
Oahu is the transportation hub of the Hawaiian Islands, with Honolulu Airport located just outside downtown Honolulu. Free shuttle buses operate between the main terminal and inter-island terminal every 15 minutes.
Rental cars are available at the airport and in downtown Honolulu. It is worth renting a car to visit the North Shore, or even if you plan to stay somewhere outside Honolulu. There are also public buses for travelling around the island.
