Overview
Oklahoma is a state in the south central region of the United States and has an extremely rich history. The state's name is derived from the Choctaw words, "okla" and "humma," meaning "red people". Oklahoma is known informally as the "Sooner State." It was formed by combining Oklahoma and the Indian Territory on November 16, 1907. Its residents are known as Oklahomans, and its capital, which is also the largest city in the state, is Oklahoma City. Oklahoma is the only state in the United States that shares its name with its capital city. Oklahoma is bordered by six states including Arkansas, Texas, Kansas, Missouri, Colorado, and New Mexico.
Activities & Attractions
The incredible outdoor activities and attractions available in the state attract a lot of visitors to Oklahoma. Some of the most popular attractions include the Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum, the Oklahoma City Zoo, the National Battlefield in Washita, the Oklahoma history center and the 45th Infantry Museum. There are more than 50 state parks and two national historic sites in the state. You can travel on the historic Route 66 Highway that passes through 48 cities in Oklahoma. No wonder Oklahoma is called the heart of the Mother Road!
The Oklahoma State Fair, Asian Festivals, the Juneteenth celebrations and the Mayfest festival are held in the city every year and attract a huge number of people. If you are a dedicated golf player, you have 11 challenging golf courses to choose from. With so many incredible activities and attractions in Oklahoma, the state offers something for the entire family.
