Overview

South Dakota is located in the Midwestern region of the United States and is named after the Lakota and Dakota which are American Indian tribes. The Missouri River bisects the state into two distinct halves known as West River and East River. South Dakota became part of the Union on November 2, 1889. The largest city in South Dakota is Sioux Falls with around 150, 000 people and Pierre currently serves as the capital city of the state.

Attractions & Activities

South Dakota is full of world-class attractions, natural wonders, and unbelievable beauty. The state lays claim to one of the largest concentrations of public parks, monuments, and memorials in the world. The Mount Rushmore National Memorial, the Crazy Horse Memorial, the Badlands National Park, and Jewel Cave National Monument are some of the pretty famous attractions in the state. The majestic, 60-foot faces of four U.S. presidents gaze out over South Dakota's Black Hills National Forest and provide a monumental history lesson for all who come to see them.

Apart from the parks and awe-inspiring monuments, there are also some other really popular activities such as Sturgis Bike Week, and bike rally. These are great for people who are interested in some active outdoor activities.

Lodging

When it comes to lodging options, there are many different choices for people who are traveling to South Dakota. The bed and breakfast inns can be great for people who are on a budget and want to experience something a little bit cozier is all of the great hotels that are available. There are also a ton of great options for people that want to stay in upscale hotels. Whatever accommodations that you are after there is bound to be something available in South Dakota and will suit your tastes too.

Transportation

There are many different options for transportation in South Dakota. One of the best is the public transportation systems, great way to save a ton of money. This is also good for people who are concerned with taking the most environmentally friendly traveling options. However you might want to consider a rental car if you are in need of a bit more freedom than what public transportation can provide. The good news is that there are many affordable alternatives for rental cars that make them available to almost everybody.
