Overview

Known as the Mountain State, West Virginia was originally a part of Virginia until its secession during Civil War. Although West Virginia would continue to face challenges, it would also have its share of victories, perhaps most importantly when President Abraham Lincoln admitted the state independently into the Union.

Activities & Attractions

West Virginia has much to offers to visitors. There are outdoor activities, zoos, museums, thrill rides, and much more. Stonewall Johnson Lake, located in Stonewall Johnson Lake State Park, is an attraction that draws many people interested in fishing, boating and swimming. West Virginia also has many architecturally interesting sites to visit. The West Virginia Independence Hall reveals the history of the state, while the Capitol Music Hall entertains people with its many wonderful performances. Other museums located in the area are the South Charleston Museum, African American Heritage Museum, Augusta County Historical Society, and the Brooke County Museum. Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, located at the meeting point of the rivers Potomac and Shenandoah, is another well-liked tourist stop.

West Virginia also has sites of geographical importance like Cranberry Glades Botanical Area, which is a group of five bog wetlands in the Ranger District of the Monongahela National Forest. The forest remains secluded and is a quiet, relaxing spot on the east coast of West Virginia. The Cass Scenic Railroad State Park is another one of the most interesting sites in the region. It takes visitors back to the era of steam-driven locomotives and old logging towns.

Activities like whitewater rafting, golfing, hiking, biking and skiing are very also popular in the state. Snowshoe Mountain, a popular winter summer destination, features activities like snowboarding, horseback riding and more.

Lodging

West Virginia lodging offers a variety of choices and vacation accommodations for those visiting the state. There are hotels, lodges, private cabins, cottages and camping sites. A lot of information is available online so be sure to check out the links below in the resources section.
